2017 Season

Sue Nami

Meet Sue Nami, our robot for the 2017 Steamworks season. Sue Nami weighed 120lbs and was (height) tall. Its purpose was to collect fuel such as wiffle balls and score them in the boilers. It was also supposed to collect gears and deliver them to the ships. At the end of the match, it could board the ship by climbing onto a rope.

See below for more details:

Steamworks

The game has a steampunk theme and teams are required to shoot wiffle balls which represent fuel into a simulated boiler which transfers the generated steam into an airship in the middle of the field. Each alliance has one airship, which they pressurize with steam from the boiler and load with plastic gears from the field. At the end of the match, robots can climb and hang on team-supplied ropes (or standard ropes supplied by FIRST) attached to the airship for additional points.

    • Quality Award sponsored by Motorola Solutions Foundation – San Diego Regional

San Diego Regional (Mar. 8 - Mar. 11)

With a mostly veteran drive team, the Robot Dolphins aimed to make a splash at their first competition of the 2017 season. A few major issues plagued the Dolphins during the first day of the competition, but the team worked ceaselessly to fix these problems by the second day of the event. The team ranked 47th in qualification matches and was drafted by the 8th seed alliance, led by the Aluminum Narwhals. The Dolphins’ alliance managed to upset the 1st seed alliance and advanced through the playoffs to the finals, winning second place at the event. Despite being unable to advance to the World Championships, the Dolphins left the event proud to have not only won second place but the Quality Award as well.

Las Vegas Regional (Apr. 5 - Apr. 8)

Following their success at the Sand Diego Regional, the Robot Dolphins were anxious to compete in Las Vegas one month later. Once again, the Dolphins struggled in the early stages of the event, but they continued to improve throughout the tournament. By the end of qualification matches, the Dolphins had climbed their way into 20th place, and they advanced to the playoffs. After a close 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals, the Dolphins and their alliance partners exceeded all expectations and moved on to the semifinals, which they narrowly lost 1-2.
